At SHIMANO, we want give the very best components to the very best bike riders in the World, and we also want to give everyone in the World the very best components at their price point. This does not mean using different technologies or developing different functionality. Instead, we push the envelope of development at the high end, and then we push this technology down along our component ranges.
So, what is it that makes top-end technology from XTR accessible to mid-range or entry-level products like DEORE? The simple answer is: material. Functionality is the same, but production methods are different. For example, carbon fibre elements will be replaced with aluminium or steel. This allows the tech to trickle down to lower price points.

Extended inner-link plate chain - smoother shifting and enhanced chain retention.
MICRO SPLINE FREEHUB design - maintains the width of existing freehubs but allows for the addition of a 10-speed cog to your 12-speed drivetrain. Micro Spline freehub bodies have 23 smaller and equally spaced saw-tooth angled splines to limit cog damage.
