How do you maintain an E-MTB?
The final question in this series of E-MTB specific topics is, “How do you maintain an E-MTB?” We know this is a concern for many riders and prospective E-MTB owners, but there is nothing to worry about, so let’s see what Rob and Chris have to say about it…
Chris quickly points out that an E-MTB is no different from a normal MTB if you take the motor and battery out of the equation. And with the EP8 motor being waterproof and the battery safely tucked away behind seals, you don’t need to treat the bike any differently than you would a normal bike when washing or maintaining. As Rob says, “Just don’t point a jet wash at the motor, much like you wouldn’t to bearings on your MTB!”.
Once the bike has been cleaned post-ride it’s a good idea to move onto a quick ‘M’ check. This check is to ensure your bike is safe to ride and to look over parts for wear, remembering that the bike is heavier and you are likely to ride it further than a normal MTB so parts can wear out quicker, unless you are riding a drivetrain with LINKGLIDE technology that lasts 3 times longer than normal!
This is an easy walk through the bike that take the shape of the letter ‘M’. From front wheel up to handlebars, from handlebars down to bottom bracket, from bottom bracket up to saddle and then down to the rear wheel, all along checking things are tight and that there isn’t any damage or unwanted movement in any of the parts of your bike. Then all that is left to do is to lube the chain and any other parts of the bike that require some grease. But don’t be scared or put off with any of this maintenance, your local SHIMANO service center will be on hand to help you out with any questions you may have.
